» Building a Core i7-920 Gaming Rig

With his Core 2 Extreme X6800 PC beginning to show signs of age, Vandy just finished upgrading his primary gaming rig to Core i7 over the holidays. With dual GeForce GTX 275s, and his Core i7-920 OC'ed to 4GHz, it's a pretty powerful performer. Read about the rest of the components used inside!

you mention that videocard exhaust sits too close to case intake fan. It is actually videocard intake. Exaust is on the other side.

Nice build man! The case is interesting and I like the design--I might have to check into one of those. I agree with some others that dual 5800 series cards would've been cooler, but since you already had one 275, the choice to add a second seemed perfectly logical to me. Oh, and the solid state disk--I've been hearing more and more how tangible the difference is after switching. Once prices come down a bit I'll have to jump on that bandwagon. Nice job on the build and on the game reviews as well--I don't read them all, but the ones I'm interested in are good.

Nice rig a few things though, im a neat freak when it comes to wiring so dont take this the wrong way but there is way to much slop hanging around in there. Cooling wise i woulda went with a megahalems, thermalrite venemous, or corsair H50. 1200W thermaltake is nice but it's way overkill for what your powering lol but i have a 1000w version of yours so i cant say much about it. Have you tried to top out your clock on your 920 yet?

yeah, there's a lot of stuff in there.. it took some doing to even flatten out that big bunch on the backside enough to get the panel back on. i don't mind so long as the fans aren't blocked and it looks okay through the window.

i haven't tried maxing out the OC because i'm fine with 4GHz. :p

i managed to get it to run at 4.4ghz also but my 1600mhz memory gave up. How do i know it was memory? after it blue screen and rebooted one the BIOS was reporting only 4gbs of ram instead of 6gbs. Anyway im happy running at 4ghz at 1.275volts

» Sort of a mesy build
I am sorry but this seems more like an exercise in what free stuff FS can get in return for some PR.

The PSU is total overkill and getting an second oldish Nvidia graphics is just wrong. Justifying going that way while going on about PhysX and dismissing DX11 for just seem like a defense for sticking to Nvidia.

Finally if the main board is so great then how come a heatsink block using a 2nd fan on the CPU cooler. I have the same cooler and two fans fit fine there is even room for me to chose the preferred orientation.

Well. The Noctua NH-U12P SE2 cools a Core i7 870 that sits on my Gigabyte GA-P55UD6 main board so it seems to me there is little to be jealous about.

you're probably right about the PSU, and i could've asked for a couple of radeon 5000s just as easily, but why? i don't need the performance, and DX11 software is still next to nonexistent. letting a GPU i already have go to waste would be wrong.

being unable to install the second fan on the heatsink is not an issue; it would MAYBE lower the temps by a couple degrees... opening my window would have a greater effect. it wouldn't even be a concern for somebody using a conventional case where aligning it that particular way isn't important.

» But why?
Well I thought the build was meant as a suggestion on how the readers should put together a gaming rig.

Can you honestly say that if real money was spend you would have made the same choices?

Still I need to acknowledge an important point you made which is often overlooked. You staying away from the P55 platform when more than one graphics card is in play was the right choice (for the reason you gave). Only thing I am not sure of is if it really matters with the highest resolutions.

My own rig is P55 based but it's more a work machine than a gaming rig so silent operation is king ergo only one graphics card. Silence is also my reason for choosing the P55UD6 since Gigabyte has done some clever things to keep power consumption down (and make plenty of room for a big CPU cooler).

What were your vantage scores w/o Phyx enabled?

You can run Physx whilst using an ATI card. You just need to have a Nvidia card and a hack. I have it and it works. Fluidmark and Batman AA proved it. I currently have an i7 that can OC safely at 4.2ghz, with 2x 4890 in CF for Graphics and a single 9800gt eco version for Physx should it be required. Runs everything at 1080p with all the trimmings no sweat which is what i wanted. It should be more then enough for atleast 2 years before another upgrade is required.

BTW the boost in Vantage is pretty substancial once using Physx. I forget the numbers as i havent tested it recently but lets just say they are significant. Only matters if you care so much about a benchmark, however game wise there isnt much out there that really makes you need Physx. Mirrors edge and Batman AA are the only 2 that interest me. At the moment the 9800GT is disabled as its useless for the current games i am playing

Physx will boost an Nvidia card's vantage score because AMD/ATI cards cannot run physx enabled scenes.
